About the Workshop

The International Breast Density & Cancer Risk Assessment Workshop (abbreviated to IBDW) has been held biennially since 2002 in San Francisco, CA. In 2019, the event was hosted for the first time in Hawai‘i by the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center, where Dr. John Shepherd (co-chair) has been relocated.

Overview

Breast cancer is now the leading cause of global cancer incidence, but standards for screening effectiveness and staging definitions vary. One method of screening is to detect dense breast tissue, which has been shown to be one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. There is constant research into breast cancer and breast density. We host the IBDW to create a collegial space where we can discuss and connect to make strides in advancing cancer research
